One of the ever engaging elements of Beatling is that once you think you've seen it all, well, you ain't.

Case in point: the annual Goldmine Beatle ish, with its uncovering of a heretofore (mostly) unknown speciality Sgt. Pepper cover, which was prepared for EMI suits way back in '67.

The faces the Fabs had chosen to honour-INCLUDING THEIR OWN!- are replaced with those of the EMI guys, which may be some sort of sacrilege, I'd reckon. Anyways, read all about it in Goldmine.

And speaking of rarities, how about the Help! Shell cover at upper left. It too was prepared as a perk for company big-wigs and even lowly employees, back, I think,
in the late 60s.

I actually saw one of these in the flesh-or cardboard-back in 1997.

Under the heading of too fooked up to make up, it appears that some of the Western world's current most sworn enemies like the Beatles too!

In a week long serialization in the New York Times, entitled "Held By The Taliban," a harrowing tale of a Times reporter kidnapped and held hostage by elements of the Taliban, a little early 60s pop culture seeped into what is supposed to be highly religious world.

In the 5 part story, the kidnapped reporter recounts how that while Taliban guards forced him to sing jihad songs, the guards had no problem singing their "favourite song," She Loves You!

Yes, it musta been quite a hootenanny, what with the extremists in their robes and head wraps and Kalashnikov, belting out those "yeah, yeah, yeahs."

In any event, the reporter escaped and lived to tell the bizarre tale of beards and mop-tops as one.

Geez, I wonder if Apple should comp these guys a couple new box-sets, so as to keep their minds and hands off wayward westerners.

THE BEATLES EP COLLECTION v THE BEATLES IN MONO '09

New collection not much better

Although most of the talk-come to think of it, ALL the talk-about the Beatles Mono Box set remasters have been about differences in mixes, whilst sound quality went unnoticed.

Well, since I had nothing better to do, I sat and compared some of the mono mixes from the early 90s set to their 2009 versions.

-

And perhaps the best bunch of tunes to use as the aural yardstick is Magical Mystery Tour, which of course was presented as the EP it originally was, for the EP Collection.

-

As for my purely subjective call, I'd say that the new mono MMT-presented now as the North American issue full LP, has a slightly cleaner sound, and also a less muddy bottom end.

But nothing really to jump out and grab you with a "WOW, that sounds so

much better!"

The best thing, of course, is that when issued as a full album, MMT fairs far better than as an EP.

After all, of the EP's original 6 tracks, the only real gem was I Am The Walrus, while the MMT album also had keepers like Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, and All You Need Is LOve.

So, if you bought the new Mono remasters, but still have the EP collection.

my suggestion is too display the cool EP black box on the mantle, and go get a frame for all the individual EP sleeves.

Shoulda really been The End

It is interesting that in many quarters, the newly remastered version of Abbey Road was the fastest off the shelves and outta the bins on Sept. 9.

Many of us so-called all-thing Beatle watchers were predicting that shurely, the winner(s) would
most likely be Sgt. Pepper and The White Album.

Any bloody ways, there is no argument that AR was/is a great recording, and it should have been the Fabs' swan song LP in the early fall of 1969.

Instead, the good but mish-moshy Let it Be was cobbled together by now jail-bird Phil Spector in 1970, and so LIB stood as the Beatles final offering.

Which is really too bad cuz the looseness of Let it Be would have fit in perfect for '69, whilst the more polished Abbey Road was surely a harbinger of things to come for rock in the more production-value/style of the early 70s.

Still, I would place Abbey Road at number 4, in the Beatle big-top.

I suppose the very tarty hipsters at the UK new Musical Express must show a certain trendy disdain for olde geezer rockers like the Beatles, but some of the rubbish reviews in their new "Collectors' Issue" on the remasters, are, well, rubbish.

But what saves the whole lot is great and rare pix of the lads through the years, and a fresh interview with Paul McCartney on what he thinks of the digital do-overs.

Pick up a copy of this mag, if you can find it, in 13 cover variations, if you dare.

Rolling Stone's latest issue is banging the Beatle drum, as well.

Unfortunately, the piece repeats the myth that the Mono Box set is a "limited edition."

As previously noted in this space, even Apple Corps own website does not so assign the box, but rather describe it as being at present unavailable due to overwhelming demand.

Finally, many Beatle fans are old enough to have been around for The Prisoner, the English TV series that ran in North America from late 1968 on, and on and on in perpetual syndication.

A bizarre tale of (seemingly) a secret agent who quits, and then is abducted

to a weird "Village," where he is tormented by a succession of sado-masochists, who try to get the agent (Number 6) to spill the intel beans.

Whatever they, the beans would be is not entirely clear, yet all in good fun. And in the (anti)climactic final episode, not only is the Beatles All You Need Is Love used in satire, but the jukeboxes playing it display American album covers like Second Album and Help! Strange, that.
